A home EV charger installation in the UK costs from £899 installed in 2026. If your property qualifies for the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant, you pay from £549 after the £350 grant is applied.
Here is what drives the final price and what to expect when you get a quote.
What is included in the price?
A proper EV charger installation includes the charger unit itself, all cabling from the fuseboard to the charger, the mounting bracket, labour, and the electrical safety certificate. The OZEV grant application, where eligible, is handled by the installer.
What is not always included: consumer unit upgrades, groundwork for external cabling, and premium charger models. Your installer should spell this out in the quote.
What affects the cost?
The main factors are:
- Charger type. A basic tethered charger (cable fixed to the unit) costs less than a smart untethered charger with app control. Smart chargers like the Zappi or Ohme cost more but give you scheduling, solar divert, and monitoring features.
- Cable run length. If your consumer unit is close to where you park, the job is straightforward. Long cable runs, or routes through walls and floors, add time and material cost.
- Consumer unit condition. If your fuseboard is old or does not have a spare way for the charger circuit, it may need upgrading. A new consumer unit typically adds £400 to £800 to the bill. A good installer assesses this at the site survey and includes any upgrade cost in the fixed price.
- External trunking. If the cable runs along an outside wall, trunking keeps it tidy and weatherproof. This is standard practice and included in most quotes.
The OZEV grant: who qualifies?
The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant covers up to £350 off a home EV charger installation. To qualify:
- The property must have off-street parking (driveway or garage)
- You must own or have ordered a qualifying EV or plug-in hybrid
- The charger must be installed by an OZEV-approved installer
The grant does not cover every property. Flats and properties without off-street parking do not qualify. Your installer submits the application: you should not need to do this yourself.
Smart charger or basic charger?
For most homeowners, a smart charger is worth the small extra cost. Smart chargers let you:
- Schedule charging during off-peak electricity tariff hours
- Divert surplus solar electricity to your car if you have solar panels
- Monitor charging history through an app
- Adjust charging rate remotely
Popular models include the Zappi (best for solar households), Ohme (excellent tariff integration), and Wallbox Pulsar Plus (compact and reliable). At a site survey, your installer should recommend the right charger for your vehicle and setup rather than pushing the highest margin product.
What about installation for a flat or rental property?
Flat installations are more complex and often do not qualify for the OZEV grant due to the shared parking situation. Landlord EV charging grants are available for rental properties: speak to your installer about eligibility.
How to get an accurate quote
The most reliable quotes come from installers who carry out a real site survey before pricing. Some online installers quote remotely based on photos: this often leads to surprises on the day when the cable run is longer than expected or the consumer unit needs work.
A site survey takes 30 minutes. A good installer comes to your property, assesses the job properly, and gives you a fixed price with no hidden extras.
