We recently installed a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro EV charger at a property in Downley, High Wycombe, HP13 5UB. The homeowner wanted a reliable, smart-enabled charger that could integrate with their Octopus Intelligent Go EV tariff. One of our NAPIT-certified electricians completed the installation in a standard 2-4 hour window, but the real work happened during the free site survey — assessing cable routes, Wi-Fi coverage, and electrical capacity before any work began. The result is a neat, white charger that blends seamlessly with the garage, and a customer who can now charge their car on a smart tariff with full remote control and scheduling.
Why did this Downley homeowner choose the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro?
The customer had done their homework. They'd read good reviews online about the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and wanted a charger that could do more than just plug in and charge. They were specifically interested in the Octopus Intelligent Go EV smart tariff, which uses real-time electricity pricing to charge your car at the cheapest times. The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro integrates directly with this service, and the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity means the charger can receive firmware updates automatically and handle smart scheduling without any extra hardware.
During our site survey, we also ran a Wi-Fi speed test at the property. This matters more than most people realise — a weak Wi-Fi signal can stop the charger from communicating with the Octopus app or receiving updates. The signal was strong enough, so we knew the smart features would work reliably from day one.
What challenges did the cable route present?
The garage wall where the charger needed to go was covered in ivy trees. These had to be cut back first to create a clear, safe space for the charger and to prevent future growth damaging the installation. Once cleared, we had about 4 metres of cable to run from the consumer unit to the charger location.
The route wasn't a straight line. We took the cable through an angle into an outside cupboard, then through another hole back into the garage. This kind of careful routing is standard practice in many Chilterns properties — especially Victorian and Edwardian homes in Downley where direct paths from the fuse board to the garage or driveway often don't exist. Every property is different, which is why the free site survey is so important. We measure everything, check for obstacles, and plan the route before we order materials or commit to a date.
Did the electrical installation require any upgrades?
Yes. When we arrived for the site survey, it became clear that the customer had no way to safely isolate the electricity supply without taking the meter offline. This is a safety issue we take seriously. We requested that the energy provider fit a double pole isolator switch — a simple but essential piece of kit that lets you turn off the charger circuit safely without affecting the rest of the house.
Once the energy provider completed that work, we were able to proceed with the installation. The customer had already chosen the correct fuse size during our survey, so there were no surprises on the day.
How did cable length affect the charging setup?
The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro comes with a 5-metre tethered cable. This is a fixed cable attached to the charger — you can't swap it for a different length. That's why measuring it carefully during the site survey is crucial. We checked that 5 metres would reach the car whether it was parked driving forwards or reversing onto the driveway. It does, comfortably. This matters because if the cable had been too short, the customer would have been stuck with a charger that couldn't reach their vehicle, and there's no way to fix that after installation.
If you're considering an EV charger and you have a long driveway or an awkward parking angle, this is something to discuss at the survey stage. Some customers combine an EV charger with solar panel installation or battery storage to maximise their energy independence, and those projects also benefit from careful planning of cable routes and electrical upgrades.
Why does the charger look so good on this property?
The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is white. The garage door is white. The cladding is white. The railings are white. It all matches. This might sound like a small detail, but it matters to homeowners — and it matters to us. We don't just bolt a charger to a wall and leave. We think about how it sits in the landscape, how it looks, and how the wiring is finished. The customer specifically complimented us on the neat wiring in the dedicated EV container unit. That's the kind of attention to detail that turns an installation into something the customer is genuinely happy to show off.
What happens next if you're thinking about an EV charger?
The first step is a free, no-obligation in-person site survey. We'll visit your property, check your electrical capacity, measure cable routes, test Wi-Fi coverage if you want smart charging, and discuss which charger makes sense for your car, your driveway, and your budget. We'll also advise you on any upgrades needed — like the isolator switch in this case — so there are no surprises.
