Solar Panel Battery Storage in the Chilterns

A solar battery stores the electricity your panels generate during the day and makes it available in the evening when you need it most. Without a battery, most of that surplus energy goes to the grid for next to nothing. With a battery, you use it yourself. We install combined solar and battery storage systems for homeowners across the Chilterns. Every installation starts with a free in-person survey. Every installation is completed to full MCS standard and includes an MCS certificate on the day. Call 01494 977298 to book your survey.

How does solar battery storage work?

A solar PV system generates electricity whenever light hits the panels. On a sunny day, a typical 4kWp system produces more electricity than most homes use during daylight hours. Without a battery, that surplus exports to the grid at around 3p to 5p per kWh under the Smart Export Guarantee. With a battery, it charges the battery instead. You then draw from the battery in the evening, when your panels are no longer generating, rather than buying electricity from the grid at 24p to 30p per kWh.

The financial difference is significant. A well-sized battery can shift 60 to 80 percent of your evening electricity demand away from the grid.

  • Store surplus solar energy instead of exporting it
  • Cut evening electricity costs by up to 70 percent
  • Fully automatic. No manual switching required
  • Works with all major solar inverters

Is a solar battery worth adding to existing solar panels?

Yes, in most cases. If your existing solar system was installed in the last ten years and you are on a modern inverter, a battery can usually be retrofitted without replacing any panels. The key question is your self-consumption pattern. If you are out during the day and use most of your electricity in the evenings, a battery closes that gap almost entirely.

Most Chilterns homeowners with a 4-5kWp solar system and a 5-10kWh battery see payback periods of 7 to 10 years on the battery addition alone. Combined with rising grid electricity costs, that payback is getting shorter each year.

We assess your existing system during the survey and confirm whether a retrofit is possible, what size battery makes sense, and whether any inverter work is needed. No guesswork, no hard sell.

  • Retrofit onto most existing solar systems
  • 5-10kWh capacity suits most 3-4 bedroom homes
  • Smart Export Guarantee payments continue unaffected
  • Free in-person survey to confirm suitability

What do homeowners ask about solar battery storage?

In most cases, yes. If your inverter is compatible, a battery can be retrofitted without replacing your panels. We assess your existing system during the free in-person survey and confirm suitability before any work is agreed.
Most 3-4 bedroom homes with 4-5kWp of solar panels suit a 5-10kWh battery. A larger battery captures more surplus but costs more. We size the battery to match your actual usage pattern during the survey.
Yes. Adding a battery does not affect your Smart Export Guarantee eligibility. You still receive payments for any surplus electricity you export to the grid once your battery is full.
A hybrid system uses a hybrid inverter that manages both the solar panels and the battery in a single unit. It is slightly more efficient than a standard inverter with a separate battery, and tends to be the preferred approach for new-build solar and battery installations.
A combined solar and battery installation typically takes one to two days depending on roof access, system size, and battery location. A battery retrofit onto an existing solar system usually takes one day.
