Can a battery work with both solar panels and a smart tariff?
Yes. This is the most effective combination. During the day, the battery prioritises charging from your solar panels. Once the battery is full, surplus solar exports to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee. Overnight, if the battery is not fully charged from solar, the battery management system tops it up automatically during the cheap off-peak window.
The result: your battery is almost always full by morning, filled with a combination of free solar electricity and cheap overnight grid electricity. You draw from that stored energy during the day, only pulling from the grid at full rates when the battery is depleted.
