New circuits to full rewires

What does domestic electrical installation cover?

Domestic electrical installation includes any fixed electrical work in a residential property. Common jobs include:

  • New circuits: for EV chargers, electric showers, cookers, home offices, garden buildings, or outbuildings
  • Consumer unit replacement: upgrading an outdated fuse board to a modern compliant unit
  • Rewires: full or partial rewires of older properties where wiring has deteriorated
  • Additional sockets and lighting: adding outlets and fixtures in kitchens, extensions, or loft conversions
  • Outdoor electrical supply: power to garden buildings, garages, and outbuildings
  • Electric vehicle charger installation: a dedicated circuit and charger unit

Does domestic electrical work need a certificate?

Yes. Most fixed electrical work in the home is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As NAPIT-registered electricians, we self-certify all qualifying work, which means you receive a proper Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work complies with BS 7671. This certificate is important when selling your property or making an insurance claim. You do not need to arrange separate local authority notification. We handle this. Why use a registered electrician rather than a general builder?

Electrical work is not just a practical task. It is a safety-critical installation governed by BS 7671 and Building Regulations. A NAPIT-registered electrician is trained, assessed, and insured to carry out this work correctly and issue the certificates that prove compliance. Work carried out without proper certification can create problems when selling your home and may invalidate your home insurance.

What do homeowners ask about domestic electrical work?

A domestic electrical installation is any fixed electrical work carried out in a residential property. This includes new circuits, consumer unit replacements, rewires, new socket and lighting circuits, and outdoor electrical supplies.
Most fixed electrical work in the home is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. This includes new circuits, consumer unit replacements, rewires, and any electrical work in kitchens, bathrooms, or outdoors. We provide an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion of all notifiable work.
Some minor electrical work, such as replacing like-for-like fittings, can be carried out by a competent homeowner. Most fixed installation work, including new circuits and consumer unit changes, must be carried out by a registered competent person. Unregistered work in notifiable areas cannot be self-certified and requires local authority inspection.
Duration depends on the scope of work. A single new circuit typically takes half a day. A consumer unit replacement takes around half a day. A partial or full rewire takes one to several days depending on the size of the property. We confirm the expected time when quoting.
You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or, where we are testing existing work, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Both are issued in accordance with BS 7671 and confirm the installation is compliant with current wiring regulations.
